Fault Planes, Fault Zone Structure and Detachment Fragmentation Resolved With High‐Precision Aftershock Locations of the 2016–2017 Central Italy Sequence

چکیده

Three devastating earthquakes of MW ≥ 5.9 activated a complex system high-angle normal, antithetic, and sub-horizontal detachment faults during the 2016–2017 central Italy seismic sequence. Waveform cross-correlation based double-difference location nearly 400,000 aftershocks illuminate complex, fine-scale structures interacting fault zones. The Mt. Vettore–Mt. Bove (VB) normal exhibits wide damage zones, including bookshelf that intersects zone. In Laga domain, comparatively narrow, shallow dipping segment deep Gorzano progressively ruptures through zone in four subsequent ∼ 5.4 events. Reconstructed planes show is fragmented sub-horizontal, partly overlaying shear correlated with extent mainshock ruptures. We find new, reaching barrier coincides bend VB may play role controlling rupture evolution.

Radiography of a normal fault system by 64,000 highprecision earthquake locations: The 2009LAquila (central Italy) case study

[1] We studied the anatomy of the fault system where the 2009L’Aquila earthquake (MW 6.1) nucleated by means of ~64 k high-precision earthquake locations spanning 1 year. Data were analyzed by combining an automatic picking procedure for P and S waves, together with cross-correlation and double-difference location methods reaching a completeness magnitude for the catalogue equal to 0.7 includin...

Structural evidence on strike slip Kinematic inversion of the Kushk-e-Nosrat Fault zone, Central Iran

NW-tending faults in Central Iran are expected to represent dominant dextral components due to their orientation with respect to the northward motion of the Arabian Plate with respect to Eurasia. However, previously published works, as well as the focal mechanism solution of the area's earthquakes, indicate evidence of sinistral kinematic along the major faults in Central Iran. Here we present ...

Continuity of subsurface fault structure revealed by gravity anomaly: the eastern boundary fault zone of the Niigata plain, central Japan

We have investigated gravity anomalies around the Niigata plain, which is a sedimentary basin in central Japan bounded by mountains, to examine the continuity of subsurface fault structures of a large fault zone—the eastern boundary fault zone of the Niigata plain (EBFZNP). The features of the Bouguer anomaly and its first horizontal and vertical derivatives clearly illustrate the EBFZNP. The s...

Fault structure and mechanics of the Hayward Fault, California, from doubledifference earthquake locations

[1] The relationship between small-magnitude seismicity and large-scale crustal faulting along the Hayward Fault, California, is investigated using a double-difference (DD) earthquake location algorithm. We used the DD method to determine high-resolution hypocenter locations of the seismicity that occurred between 1967 and 1998. The DD technique incorporates catalog travel time data and relativ...

Aftershock Area Expansion and Mechanical Heterogeneity of Fault Zone within Subduction Zones

We investigate global variations in the pattern of aftershock area expansion associated with large subduction zone earthquakes. The expansion of aftershock areas with time is relatively small in the subduction zones of Alaska, the Aleutians, Mexico, and parts of the Kuriles and South America. These subduction zones are interpreted to be characterized by moderate to strong interplate coupling. I...
